Microsoft has partnered with 14 manufacturers, incl. Dell, Lenovo, HP..etc.
Windows 8 will emerge as good alternative but owing to application compatibility, it would take some time to challenge other Operating Systems.
Windows 8 is available in two versions - Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.
The users who are running PCs with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 can download to upgrade to Windows 8 for an estimated retail price of Rs.1,999*.
And Windows 7 PCs purchased between June 2, 2012 - January 31,2013 can download Windows 8 Pro for an estimated price of Rs.699/- with the Windows Upgrade Offer*.
NOTE: Estimated Price in India after January 31st 2013 is Rs.11,000/-
*Upgrade Prices only applicable if download from the Microsoft Website. In case you cannot download the OS and need the retail box, you can buy Windows 8 Pro at a price of around Rs. 4,000/-.
System requirements: Any computer that is running Windows 7 can run Windows 8 easily. If you want to be specific, the Microsoft says that a machine should have the minimum hardware requirements:
- Processor 1GHz or faster
- 1GB RAM (32-bit) or 2GB RAM (64-bit)
- 16GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20GB (64-bit)
- DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
- For Modern UI apps a screen with a resolution of 1024x768 pixels
